He is a modern specialist, doctor and surgeon, with experience in sexology, endocrinology, plastic surgery, urology, who focuses his interest on the sexual development of the male from birth to senescence, accompanying him through the various stages of life, on a par with that of the gynaecologist for women. At birth for sex attribution or to highlight congenital anomalies, at puberty to highlight and treat serious problems such as early puberty or, on the contrary, delayed puberty, which could have serious consequences if neglected. Around the age of 20, to check sexual development and highlight problems such as sexual infections, varicoceles, which could have negative repercussions on fertility; it is known that 50% of cases of infertility in couples are male-related and prevention could reduce their incidence. Since there is no sex education, neglected by the institutions, correct sexual information, also explaining and treating problems such as premature ejaculation, is the Andrologist's task.

In old age, the andrologist is often consulted for problems of erectile dysfunction, which is often a symptom of various pathologies that need to be diagnosed and treated; E.D. often precedes vascular events (strokes, heart attacks) in other organs by a few months, so never give the blue or yellow pill without a diagnosis first.

Considering the lengthening of the average male lifespan (47 years in 1900, 78 now and tending to 100 in 2100), there will be an increasing need to prevent and treat the symptoms of the Andropause, a complex phenomenon linked to the ageing of tissues and the drop in testosterone. Then there is the surgical side (penile malformations, implantation of prostheses, varicocelectomies), which requires ultra-specialised techniques refined over the years.

Andrology is a relatively young branch of medicine that aims to protect the reproductive and sexual health of men. In this it stands as the necessary alternative to male gynaecology for women.

Andrology is not yet an official academic specialisation, but rather the superspecialist field of interest of some urologists or endocrinologists who devote themselves in particular to the study of the male genital apparatus, its pathologies, prevention and treatment
