Urology

Urology is the branch of internal medicine that studies and treats problems affecting the urinary tract of both sexes and the male reproductive system. The urologist, therefore, is an internist specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the urinary tract in men and women and the organs responsible for reproduction in men (penis, prostate, testicles and seminal vesicles).

Urology is a specialist branch of surgery that deals with diseases of the urinary and male genital system. A urological examination is therefore necessary if disorders or abnormalities of the urinary function and sexual sphere appear, including impotence, infertility or infections of the genital organs.

The urologist's greatest commitment is to the oncological treatment of neoplasms of the genital and urinary organs. For this reason, the urologist is confronted on a daily basis with radiologists and pathologists for diagnosis, oncologists and radiotherapists for therapy, and also psychologists for the impact that these oncological diseases have on the patients' quality of life.

Disorders of the male genital organs and the sexual sphere are also considered to be the domain of the urologist. Again, this is a very specialised surgery that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of varicoceles, impotence, genital infections that are often associated with urinary infections, and male infertility.
